The Detroit Lions said in a statement that Jessie was "a fantastic young man who is gone way too soon" and "a model teammate."
Jessie Lemonier was a linebacker and defensive end for the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers.
He played in six games for Los Angeles that season before signing with Detroit in 2021, where he played in seven games and made two starts.
Lemonier was selected in the November draught by the Arlington Renegades of the XFL, but he ultimately decided to play for the USFL.
The Birmingham-based league praised him as "a gifted football player and by all accounts a nice person."
The reason of death has not yet been made public.
